CVS Sale Sunday!

Last week I think I mis-posted the Bounty paper towel sale as $6.99 for a 12 pk. instead of an 8 pk. and I apologize for that. It was still a great sale, though! This week, there are a few really good ones. My favorite is the egg coloring kit which is free after extrabucks until Monday!

Paas egg coloring kit buy @ $1.99 get $1.99 extrabucks so it's FREE until MONDAY!!!
Scott paper towel 8 pk. $5.49. I had these last time because I missed the Bounty sale, and they're really good, too. They rip a little weird, but I use them for my baby wipes and they work wonderfully!
Confectionary Lane Jelly Beans 2/$1.00 until MONDAY, after Monday they're $.99.
Haagen-Dazs 2/$6...great deal on great ice cream, it's usually $4.99 each. Use it atop the Blodie Bites, this week's scrimpySnack!
English Muffins are buy one, get one free.
Crock-Pot is $12.99...I'm not sure what size it is, but that's a cool deal!
New Colgate Wisp $1.97 for a 2-pk...I guess that's good...seems like a cool product.
All 2x concentrate laundry detergent $4.99
Pampers diapers 2/$18.99
Kellogg's cereal 2/$5
CVS brand peroxide and alcohol 2/$1...restock your medicine cabinet if you need to!

I urge you to shop the sales and stock up on items you need and use! Yesterday, I went to CVS and bought 2 Campbell's soups (with a $1 coupon), Hellman's mayo, and 2 crunchy Skippy peanut butters for $1.97 after extrabucks and my coupon! That's amazing. You can search online for coupons for items you use too, use them with sales, and maximize your savings. Happy Sale Shopping!

Whole Foods Wednesday (Thursday)

I knew I was forgetting about something yesterday...

Here's the Whole Foods circular (and just a reminder, these prices are valid in RI and CT, also!).

My picks:

Bone-in rib steak is $7.99 from $12.99...a great deal! I'd buy this for a special date night dinner.

Wallaby organic low fat yogurt cups $.69 from $1.39 each (still much more expensive than if you bought the 365 brand 32 oz., but a good deal nonetheless...I would still buy mine in a big container and just bring a small reusable container along with me, but if you use cups, these are a great deal)

Green cabbage 4 lbs/$1.00. This is a great great deal! It's 75% off! Just in time for a St. Patrick's Day meal. I'm going to grab this today.

New England Style Corned Beef $4.99/lb. You can bet we're having corned beef and cabbage this weekend when Mike's mom visits!

Irish Soda Bread 3/$6 from $5.49 each...I'm making fresh...I've never tried it so I'll post about it.

Red Potatoes $.79/lb from $1.29/lb. They're not organic, so I'll probably just go get them from Haymarket for $.50/lb.

So there you have it! My picks from this week's sale flyer. I'm going over there this afternoon, so I will fill you in on some in-store sales. I was thinking about getting some stew meat for a beef stew also. We'll see.

I'll be back this afternoon with sale updates and 2 potato recipes in honor of the Whole Foods Sale on potatoes! (I actually had potatoes left over, but since they're on sale, you can take advantage of a great price). Stay tuned :).

Stop and Shop Sale Alert!

Sorrento Ricotta cheese is on sale $3.49 for a 2 lb. container. This is a great deal!!!

I'd buy 2. Use one fresh (and make the Turkey and Spinach Manicotti recipe in my Freezer Veggie post), and make a big lasagna with the other and freeze it for later (using my Tomato Sauce recipe found here). Next Freezermeal Friday will be lasagna, so buy one of these if you plan to make it!

Shaw's Sales & Stop and Shop Sales starting 3/6/09

Whole Foods beats Shaw's sales on Hummus, Organic carrots, and Asparagus! Good job, Whole Foods...I love that place...

You can see the Shaw's circular here, and the Stop and Shop circular here. I'm not really going to go into Stop and Shop, because basically,a lot of the items at Shaw's are on sale at S & S, it's just less expensive at S & S.

This is actually the last time I'll really get into specifics on the sales at Shaw's and S & S. I really wanted to list everything that was a great deal for you guys, but, honestly, there are rarely great deals on healthy foods at Shaw's and S & S. Even S & S and Shaw's organic brands can't beat TJs and WFs prices. You can usually find even cheaper every day prices at Whole Foods or TJs on everything that goes on sale at the other stores. Like this small comparison shows, healthy foods are cheaper at stores that cater to healthy foods. So, when there is an amazing buy at Shaw's or S & S, I will let you know, but I won't go through everything.

This month, however, watch for my post about where you can find staples cheapest in the city (flour, eggs, butter, etc...). Watch out for that. It's coming. It's coming to get you.

I'm sorry to write a weekly post, and then to stop, but I'm just getting started with the blog, and figuring out what works and what doesn't. I don't like reporting a sale to you at Shaw's when you can get the same item at TJs everyday for less money, you know what I mean???! I'm just looking out for all of you! Not looking to waste any time. If you're trying to live a scrimpy healthy lifestyle like me, you can just do what I do - buy everything I like from TJs, get what I can't get at TJs at WFs, and make occasional trips to S & S to stock up on some staples that they sell dirt cheap (read: brown sugar).

Most of the decent sales this week are on meat. So, if you're a meat eater, this is probably a good opportunity to stock up and freeze some stuff!

My freezer friendly picks are:

-Perdue roasting chicken $1.49/lb

-Shaw's Chicken Legs, Drumsticks, or Thighs $1.49/lb (you can freeze these for the season's first BBQ...defrost and marinate for the grill)

-Shaw's chuck stew $2.99/lb

-Shaw's boneless chuck roast $3.49/lb (for pot roast)

-Wild Harvest Fresh Ground Turkey $4.29/lb

-Wild Harvest Boneless Chicken Tenders

-Frozen raw shrimp $6.99/lb

-Haddock, tilapia, and trout $6.99/lb

-Steakhouse Choice Sirloin tips steak $6.99/lb

-Perdue split chicken breast $1.99/lb

-Prince Edward Island mussels $1.99/lb

Other deals:

-Morningstar products 2/$7 or $3.50 each (I like to buy these for a quick dinner when there's nothing to eat in the house, my favorite is Pizzaburger!)

-Kashi frozen pizzas $2/$11 or $5.50 each

-Organic ice cream $4.99 16 oz. Good deal!

-General Mills cereal, buy 2/$6 and get a coupon for free gallon of milk on your next trip. That's kind of cool. That's like getting the boxes of cereal for $1.50 each.

-Shaw's sugar $2.49/5 lb bag

-Kashi 7 whole grain pilaf 2/$4

-Contadina tomatoes 28 oz 4/$5

-Cabot VT cheese 2/$5

-Kraft Deli Natural Cheese Slices 2/$6

Produce Deals:

-Wild Harvest Organic baby green mix 11 oz. $4.99

-Squash, broccoli crowns, and mushrooms $.99

That's All! P.S. I've decided to tack on the post about freezing your own fruits and veggies along with the recipe for Freezermeal Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for it. See you all tomorrow!

Whole Foods Sale Wednesday!

NOTICE: These sales are valid in RI and CT, too...just realized that. So if you're reading from there, these apply to you, too!

This week at Whole Foods there are a few good sales. I won't be in the city to scour the actual store for deals though, and I apologize. To make it up to all of you, I will writing a post on how to freeze your own fruits and vegetables. This technique will help you take better advantage of produce sales, because when something you like goes on a great sale, you can stock up and freeze your own!

Here's the link to this week's flyer...and here is my list of sale highlights:
  • Asparagus is $1.99/lb from $3.99/lb, which is even cheaper than it is frozen. I will be posting about freezing vegetables tomorrow, so if you're an asparagus lover, you can stock up and freeze some for later. These would be great steamed as a side with some butter and lemon, or in a fritatta.
  • Cedar's hummus is 2/$7 (or 1/$3.50) from $4.99 each. I usually make my own hummus and bean dips, but if you don't, this is a great deal! Cedar's is the best store bought hummus I've ever tasted. I think it's even better than my homemade.
  • Murray bridge cheddar is on sale $4.99/lb from $6.99/lb.
  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are $4.99/lb from $6.59/lb. These are good to stock up on and freeze. I'd grill or saute a batch and add them to salads all week for lunch. You could also add them to a stir fry or make dinner sandwiches with them.
  • If you're a prepared foods type of person, there's Red Quinoa salad with almonds, blueberries, and feta for $4.99/lb from $6.99/lb.
  • Finally, short ribs of beef are on sale $3.99/lb from $5.99./lb and make the perfect end of winter crock pot dinner. I won't be in the city to take advantage of this sale, but if I were you, I'd hit up A Year of Crockpotting for some suggestions. There's a Korean ribs recipe, a Chinese style ribs recipe, and a BBQ ribs recipe...(I hate not knowing how to really spell BBQ...barbeque, barbecue?). So get out your crockpot before it gets warm out!

So, in honor of this week's asparagus sale, tomorrow I will be posting the technique for freezing your own produce. I hope you come on back to ch-ch-check it out!

What in the world do you do with bone-in chicken breasts???

Good Monday Morning! As you may or may not have read, Whole Foods bone-in split chicken breasts are on sale $2.99. I had no clue what to tell you to do with them, as I've never cooked with them myself. They sounded like a good deal, so I posted them, and what do you know? Erin over at $5 Dinners has provided us with a great post on how to prepare these little guys. How great!

What else do you guys do with these dang things?

Sausage Skillet Recipe (made with $2.99/lb fresh sale sausage at Whole Foods)

DISCLAIMER: This is a 20 Minute Meal (17, actually!).

As promised, I've written a recipe using the amazing sausage that's on sale at Whole Foods this week (until Tuesday). This can obviously be made with any sausage, but Whole Foods makes their's fresh, and it's just about the most beautiful sausage I've ever seen. I don't even really eat meat, but this stuff is top of the line. I always take sausage out of the casing before cooking with it, and this sausage just has huge chunks of fresh pork in it. It's actually really impressive, and I never even knew that this is what sausage is supposed to look like. Plus, they're huge. They're 6 oz. each, which is the equivalent of two normal sausages.

awesome price

awesome sausage

So, since these are such a steal, I decided to use them in 2 recipes. If you're a sausage person, I would buy a few pounds of these and freeze them. They'd be great on the grill. We chose hot, but they have sweet and herb, as well. These are originally $4.99/lb and are on sale $2.99.

The recipes I've written are Hot and Spicy Sausage Skillet and Sausage, Mushroom, and Bean Meatloaf. I will share the first recipe, but not the second one (meatloaf). The meatloaf was good, but I haven't perfected the recipe yet. The point is, you can buy a pound of these sausages, a pound of mushrooms, and a can (or 1/3 bag dried) of beans and make 2 dinners that serve a bunch of people.

Hot and Spicy Sausage Skillet
serves 5-6 hungry adults

12 oz. spicy sausage (about 2 1/2 c. for those without a scale - 2 links from WFs - $2.24)

1 c. organic red beans ($.55 - TJs)

3 1/2 c. quartered white button mushrooms ($1.50 - Haymarket)

2 T. olive oil ($.24)

2 cloves sliced garlic ($.04)

1 t. salt (<$.01)

1 t. dried parsley ($.06)

1 t. dried basil ($.06)

1 dash black pepper (<$.01)

4 c. organic whole wheat penne ($.85)

Total is $5.50 for a meal that serves at least 5. That's $1.10/person. Not bad.

  1. Bring large pot of water to a boil, with 2 T. salt.
  2. While that heats up, quarter a 10 oz. package of mushrooms, which will yield about 3 1/2 c. mushrooms. Quartering means cutting into 4 chunks. Not 4 slices. I should've taken a picture of that, sorry. It's like cutting a cross in the top of the mushroom. OK. It's not that difficult. Also, while the water is heating:
Squeeze the sausage out of the casing into bite sized chunks. Also:
  3. Slice 2 cloves of garlic.
  4. Add 4 c. penne to boiling water and stir.
  5. In a LARGE skillet, over medium high heat, add 2 T. olive oil and let it get hot for a second. Then add in the sausage chunks, salt, parsley, and basil, and brown over medium-high heat until cooked (6 minutes or so).
  6. Once cooked, add mushrooms, garlic slices, and beans, along with 2 ladlefulls of pasta water. Let it simmer over medium-high heat while the penne finishes cooking.
  7. Once the penne is done, add that to the skillet (about half of the pasta water should've evaporated and cooked the mushrooms) and toss (still over medium-high heat). This helps the pasta absorb the sauce.
  8. Serve and enjoy.

scrimpyTips for this recipe:

- You can use chicken or turkey sausage also.

- This would be delicious with some fresh grated cheese on top.

- You can make the sausage topping ahead of time, and then just reheat it with some pasta water. Toss with fresh pasta and you're good to go.

CVS Sale Item of the Week Award (plus some info on filtering your water)

The CVS Sale Item of the Week Award goes to Pur water filtration items which are 20% off.

Getting a water filtration system can be pricey to start, and the refills are often expensive. I try to buy my refills at a wholesale club like BJs when I go home to NY. But if you don't have wholesale as an option, your best bet is to try to catch them on sale at CVS. We use Brita, but Pur goes on sale at CVS and Brita rarely does. So, i'd go with Pur.

Pur items deserve the award because it's important to filter your water. Check out these articles about what can be found in tap water. I mean, obviously Pur wants to scare you into buying their product, but what they're reporting is true. There's bad stuff in tap water and it's probably better (especially for children) to avoid drinking it all the time. It's not too hard, or really too expensive, to get a filter.

If you are worried about the cost of a filter system and refills, think about how much you spend on bottled water. Now, pay $20 for stainless steel water bottle, and pay about $30 for your filtration system. That's $50. If you buy a bottle of water a day this will pay for itself in a month. And you save bottles from landfills. And you don't drink plastic chemicals. And you don't drink other crap from your tap.

So, that's all! I hope I motivated you to start toting your own bottle filled with fresh, filtered water from home. It's good for you, and good for the earth.

CVS Sale Sunday

Well, there's nothing too great on sale at CVS this week. I'm not lying, see for yourself. Here are the highlights, though:
  • There's a bunch of junk food-ish type things on sale if you're into that. I mean, everyone is ocassionally, right? Doritos are 2/$5, CVS brand cookies are on sale 2/$5, and CVS crakers are on sale 2/$3. These crackers are good, trust me. And if you pack your lunch and you like junk food, these are good sales because you can individually package this stuff and really save.
  • Drumstick ice cream, Dibs, Fruit Bars, and Skinny Cow 6 pk. are on sale 2/$6 or $3 each. Dibs are addictive. Be really careful.
  • CVS Brand vitamins are buy one get one free. If you're like me, and procrastinate taking your vitamins, this is a good sale. Just go buy them and be done with it.
  • Dawn dish soap is $.97. I used to buy this before I switched to earth and people friendly Method soap.
  • Clorox GreenWorks is on sale 2/$6. If you don't want to make your own cleaners, then you can buy this and be greener.
  • Pur water filtration products are 20% off. This is a good time to buy a system and start bottling your own water into a stainless steel water bottle. You could also stock up on refills. Once you buy one, you can always join club Pur (sounds cool...NOT) and get coupons. Then you could use the coupons when Pur goes on sale at CVS and really save.
  • Cascade dishwasher liquid is $2.99. I used to stock up on this when it went on sale this cheap. I am going to explore greener options once mine runs out, though. But if you use a dishwasher and this kind of soap, it's a great sale.
  • Crest is 2/$5...be sure not to get tricked into buying the small tube of Pro-Health...get one of the big tubes.

CVS NOT sale item of the week award goes to Bounty basic. These paper towels SUCK and smell weird, too. Wait until Bounty normal 12 pks. go on sale $6.99. You couldn't pay me $5.88 to buy the Bounty basic again.

So there you have it. Nothing too great, but I figure I'd let you know!

Ten Minute Meal Thursday...ok, like 15 (but that doesn't count the time it takes to boil the water...this is active prep time)

UPDATE: I've added pictures, and changed a couple of things...the cheese was a tiny bit more expensive than I had thought, so I updated the price, and the meal took a little over 10 minutes. That doesn't count the 5 minutes the water takes to boil, though. I'd prep the garlic and tomatoes while the water boils.

Here's the first Ten Minute Meal Thursday Recipe. I'm trying to incorporate a sale item from the area, which would be the organic cherry tomatoes over at Shaw's. Stay tuned next week for another Ten Minute Meal using the $2.99/lb pork sausage at Whole Foods!

Tomato Basil Toss
serves 4

- 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes ($2.99 organic on sale @ Shaw's starting 2/27)
- 2 T olive oil ($.24)
- 2 cloves garlic ($.04)
- 1 t. dried basil ($.06)
- 1/2 t. salt (<$.01)
- 1 dash black pepper (<$.01)
- 1 lb. whole wheat or plain spaghetti or linguine (organic whole wheat @ Trader Joe's $1.29)
-1/2 c. grated fresh Romano cheese (I really don't know exactly what this costs, since I haven't bought it in so long, but I'm pretty sure that at TJs it's around $9.00/lb which would make a half cup (which weighs 1.3 oz) cost $.73)

Total: $5.37 for a mostly organic dinner for 4! Not bad.

  1. Put on pot of boiling water and salt it well (with, like, more salt than you'd think, about 2 T./pound of pasta).
  2. Slice garlic cloves into thin slices and cut tomatoes in half.
  3. In a large (preferably nonstick) skillet, heat garlic, oil, basil, salt, and pepper all together at the same time on medium low (if you add garlic to a hot pan it will burn on the outside and stay raw on the inside). You could sprinkle in some red pepper flakes here if you're looking for spice (1/4 t.)
  4. Your water should be boiling now, so put in the whole package of pasta.
  5. Once garlic is just barely golden, add the tomatoes. Cook for about 3 minutes over medium high heat, or until they start to soften a bit.
  6. Ladle out 2 or 3 ladlefulls of pasta water into the skillet and allow that to simmer together on medium until the pasta is done.

  7. When the pasta is done, drain it and add it to the skillet (turn off heat), tossing to coat with tomatoes and oil and such. You can add the cheese during this final toss, or add it to each bowl after it's served.

scrimpyTips:

- If you garden in the summer (I'm doing containers on the fire escape!), this is a great go-to meal. It'd be even better with fresh basil from the garden :).
- Reserve some of the pasta water, and if the pasta looks a bit dry try adding another ladlefull of pasta water.
- Taste this before taking it out of the pan, the recipe may under-do the salt. I figure everyone has different taste and you can always add a bit more in the end (however, it's always important to try to season your food to your taste while it's cooking, because salting something while it's cooking brings out and enhances the natural flavors of ingredients, whereas adding salt at the end mostly tastes salty).
- This is delicious leftover and cold, perfect for a microwave free lunch
- You can slice the garlic and tomatoes beforehand and store them separately so they're ready to go when you are
- This is easily made vegan with the omission of the cheese
- Add the cheese in very last, if you add it in while the skillet is hot it gets stringy

The next Thursday meal is going to be a 20 minute meal. I'm going to include the time it takes to make the pasta...10 minute meal is actually a little misleading...

More Whole Foods Sales!

Ok, so I ran to the store today to check out what other unadvertised deals they had. Here's what I have for you:
  • Organic whole wheat rustic bread $2.19 from $3.39
  • Conventional grapefruit $.69 (that's $.10 cheaper than stop and shop)
  • Avocados 2/$3 from $1.99 each
That's all :)...nothing too major. If you like grapefruit, stock up, I know I will. They can stay for up to 2 weeks in your fridge (or they can in mine, at least) and are a great fat burner (plus they're full of fill you up fiber!).
